WHAT A SLAB LEAK ACTUALLY IS
Most homes across Corona, Riverside and the wider Inland Empire are built slab-on-grade: a single poured concrete pad, with the water supply lines run underneath it or cast into it. A slab leak is a failure in one of those buried lines. The water has nowhere to go but into the soil beneath your floor, or up through the concrete.
The important thing to understand is that a slab leak is a pressurised supply line failure, not a drain problem. A blocked drain stops when you stop using the fixture. A slab leak runs continuously, at mains pressure, twenty-four hours a day, until somebody shuts the water off. That is why the damage curve is so steep and why “wait and see” is the most expensive option on the table.
Two lines can fail: the cold side or the hot side. Hot-side leaks are considerably more common, because hot water accelerates corrosion, the pipe expands and contracts against the concrete with every draw, and the recirculation loop in many homes means that line is working around the clock. If you have a warm patch on the floor, it is almost certainly the hot line.
SEVEN SIGNS OF A SLAB LEAK
Slab leaks announce themselves indirectly. Any one of these on its own might be something else; two or more together is a strong signal.
1. A warm spot on the floor
The most diagnostic sign there is. A patch of tile or laminate that is noticeably warmer than the floor around it means hot water is running under it. Walk the house barefoot — people find these with their feet long before they find them any other way.
2. The sound of running water with everything off
Shut off every fixture and appliance, then stand still and listen near the floor. A faint continuous hiss or rush is water moving through a line that should be static.
3. A water bill that jumped for no reason
Nothing changed in the household but the usage climbed. A supply leak under a slab is metered water — you are paying for every gallon going into the dirt.
4. Pressure that dropped off
Showers and taps lost force across the whole house rather than at one fixture. Water escaping upstream of your fixtures means less of it arriving at them.
5. Cracked or lifting flooring
Tile that has cracked in a line, grout failing along one run, wood or laminate cupping or lifting. Moisture is coming up through the slab and moving the material above it.
6. Damp carpet or a musty smell
A persistently damp area of carpet with no spill to explain it, or a mildew smell that will not clear. Under-slab moisture wicks up into whatever is on top of the concrete.
7. The meter moves when nothing is on
The definitive home test. Shut off every fixture, find your water meter, and watch the leak indicator. If it turns with the house completely off, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and your fixtures.
HOW WE FIND IT WITHOUT OPENING YOUR FLOOR
The old approach to slab leaks was to break concrete until you found water. That is not how this is done any more, and you should not accept it. Locating comes first, and it is non-destructive.
Isolate and pressure test
Before anything else we confirm the leak is actually under the slab and establish whether it is on the hot or cold side. Isolating sections and watching pressure behaviour narrows the search area enormously and rules out the leaks that only look like slab leaks.
Acoustic listening
Water escaping a pressurised pipe makes a specific noise. Ground microphones and amplified listening gear pick that signature up through concrete and let us follow it to its loudest point.
Thermal imaging
A hot-side leak warms the slab above it. An infrared camera renders that as a visible plume on the floor, which is often the fastest way to pin down a hot line.
Line tracing and camera work
Knowing exactly where the pipe runs is half the job. Tracing equipment maps the route so we are not guessing at the geometry, and camera inspection covers anything accessible.
Locating is a service in its own right — if you are not yet sure what you have, start with leak detection. A confirmed location turns a vague, frightening problem into a defined job with a defined price.
FOUR WAYS TO REPAIR IT — AND HOW TO CHOOSE
Once the leak is located there is a genuine decision to make, and it depends on the age of the plumbing, the number of previous leaks, and where in the run the failure sits. Anyone who quotes you the same answer before locating the leak is selling, not diagnosing.

WHY INLAND EMPIRE SLABS LEAK
This region has a particular combination of conditions, and it is not bad luck that slab leaks turn up here so consistently.
Slab-on-grade is the default
Very little of the local housing stock has a basement or a crawl space. Supply lines that would be reachable elsewhere are cast into or buried beneath concrete here, which turns an ordinary pipe repair into a slab job.
Mineral-heavy water
Inland Empire supply is hard. Mineral content drives scale on the inside of pipe and contributes to the localised corrosion that produces pinhole failures. A water softener addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
Expansive soils and ground movement
Soils here move with moisture content. A slab that shifts puts bending and shear stress on any pipe rigidly held in it, and a line that has been stressed for years fails at its weakest point.
Hot-line thermal cycling
Every hot water draw expands the pipe; every cooldown contracts it. Against concrete or a tight sleeve, that is abrasion repeated thousands of times a year. It is the main reason the hot side goes first.
WHAT WAITING ACTUALLY COSTS
We are not going to invent a number for you, because it depends entirely on where the leak is and what is above it. But the mechanism is worth understanding, because it is the reason slab leaks are urgent in a way that most plumbing problems are not:
- The water never stops. It is a pressurised line. It runs at full mains pressure continuously, and you are metered for all of it.
- Saturated soil loses bearing capacity. Water washing out the fill under a slab can undermine the support the concrete is sitting on.
- Moisture migrates upward. Concrete wicks. Flooring, subfloor, baseboards, drywall and cabinetry sit directly above the leak and absorb the consequences.
- Persistent damp grows mould. A slow leak under a floor is a dark, warm, permanently wet environment, and remediation is frequently more expensive than the plumbing repair that caused it.
- The repair itself gets bigger. A located leak in a defined spot is a contained job. The same leak six months later may have taken the flooring and the subfloor with it.
If you suspect a slab leak, the single most useful thing you can do before we arrive is shut off the main and check whether the meter stops.

How do I know it is a slab leak and not something simpler?
Run the meter test. Shut off every fixture and appliance in the house, then look at your water meter’s leak indicator. If it is still moving with the house completely off, water is escaping from the pressurised supply system somewhere. That does not prove it is under the slab, but it does prove you have a supply leak, and it is the single most useful piece of information you can give us before we arrive.
Do you have to break up my floor to find it?
No. Locating is non-destructive — acoustic listening, thermal imaging, pressure isolation and line tracing. Concrete only gets opened once we know precisely where the failure is and only if the chosen repair route calls for it. A reroute, for instance, involves no slab work on the new line at all.
Should I repair the one leak or repipe the whole house?
It depends on how old the pipe is and whether this is the first failure. A single leak in reasonably young, otherwise sound pipe is a spot repair, and it would be wrong to sell you a repipe for it. But if you have had two or three leaks in the same system, the pipe is telling you that it is failing generally rather than at one point, and continuing to chase individual leaks becomes the more expensive path. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Is a slab leak covered by homeowners insurance?
That is genuinely between you and your insurer, and we will not tell you what your policy says. What we can say is that policies commonly treat the resulting water damage differently from the plumbing repair itself, and that documentation matters. We provide our findings and the location data in writing so you have something concrete to submit.
Can I shut the water off and just use it when I need it?
As a stopgap for a night, yes — shutting the main stops the loss and stops the damage clock. As a strategy it does not work, because every time you turn the water back on you are re-pressurising the failed line and putting more water under your floor. Treat it as a way to buy hours, not weeks.
Why do slab leaks so often turn up on the hot water line?
Three reasons stacking on top of each other. Heat accelerates the corrosion chemistry. The pipe expands and contracts with every hot water draw, abrading wherever it contacts concrete or a sleeve. And in homes with a recirculation loop, that line is moving hot water continuously rather than only when someone opens a tap. The cold line experiences none of that.
Will fixing the leak stop it happening again?
A spot repair fixes that spot. Whether the rest of the line follows depends on why it failed — a single mechanical fault is unlikely to repeat, whereas general corrosion through the whole system means the other sections are on the same trajectory. That is exactly what we assess while we are there, and it is the honest basis for choosing between a spot repair, a reroute and a repipe.
