Galvanized Plumbing: Why It Needs to Go (And What to Replace It With)

If your home was built before 1960, there’s a good chance galvanized steel pipes are still hiding behind your walls. They were the standard for decades. They were also a ticking clock.

By 2026, just about every galvanized line still in service is past its useful life. Here’s why galvanized fails, how to know if you have it, and what comes next.

What Galvanized Plumbing Actually Is

Galvanized pipe is steel that’s been coated in a layer of zinc to slow rust. From the 1880s through about 1960, it was the dominant material for residential water supply lines in the United States. Strong. Cheap. Easy to thread together. Looked like it would last forever.

Turns out the zinc coating wears off from the inside, slowly, over decades. Once it’s gone, the steel underneath corrodes. Then the real problems start.

Why Galvanized Fails

Three different failure modes, all unfolding in slow motion.

Internal corrosion and scale. As the zinc dissolves, mineral scale and rust build up inside the pipe. The pipe diameter shrinks. Water pressure drops. Eventually a pipe that started at 3/4 inch carries water like a 1/4 inch pipe.

Discolored water. Rust flakes break off and travel through the line. The hot tap runs brown or sandy when you haven’t used it for a few hours. Sometimes the toilet bowl gets stained. Sometimes laundry comes out spotted.

Sudden leaks at threaded joints. Galvanized pipe sections screw together. Corrosion focuses at those threaded joints, weakening them. Eventually a joint splits and you’ve got a flood.

The Health Question

This is the part homeowners don’t always know. Old galvanized pipe is sometimes connected to lead service lines or contains residual lead from the zinc coating process. As the pipe corrodes, lead can leach into drinking water.

The EPA’s guidance on lead in drinking water is clear: no level of lead exposure is considered safe, especially for children and pregnant women. If your home has galvanized supply lines and was built before 1986, water testing is a smart first move.

How to Tell If You Have Galvanized Pipes

Look where pipes are exposed. Check the basement, garage, under sinks, or in the crawl space.

  • Color: dull silver-gray to dark gray, often with rust streaks
  • Texture: threaded fittings at every connection (different from copper sweat joints or PEX crimp rings)
  • Test: a magnet sticks to galvanized steel (it won’t stick to copper or brass)
  • Sound: tap it with a coin. Galvanized has a dull, dense ring. Copper sounds tinnier.

If you see any galvanized exposed, assume the same material runs through your walls.

The Pressure Loss Test

Quick way to gauge how bad your galvanized has gotten:

  1. Turn on the shower on full hot
  2. Flush a nearby toilet
  3. Watch what happens to the shower flow

If the shower drops to a trickle while the toilet refills, your pipes are scaled down small enough that they can’t keep up with two demands. That’s galvanized telling you it’s time.

Why You Can’t Just Patch Old Galvanized

Tempting to fix the leak and move on. Two problems with that.

First, modern code requires dielectric connections when you join dissimilar metals. So patching galvanized with copper isn’t a simple swap. Done wrong, the connection corrodes faster than the original pipe did.

Second, if one section failed, others are right behind it. The leak you’re fixing is your second warning. The first was the brown water you’ve been seeing for years. Spending money on patches in a galvanized system is like buying new tires for a car with a cracked engine block.

What to Replace It With

Two solid options for a SoCal repipe:

PEX (cross-linked polyethylene). Flexible plastic tubing. Cheaper. Faster to install. Resistant to scale and chemicals. Expected lifespan 40-50+ years. Most common choice for residential repipes in 2026.

Type L copper. The premium option. Higher upfront cost. Longer expected lifespan (50-70+ years). Some homeowners prefer it for resale value or because they trust the material more.

The right choice depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay, and how the pipes need to be routed through the structure.

Cost Expectations

Typical 2026 SoCal residential repipe project for a 3-bedroom home:

  • PEX whole-house repipe: $5,500 to $11,000
  • Copper Type L whole-house repipe: $9,000 to $17,000
  • Add $500-$1,500 if drywall repair and paint are included
  • Add $2,000+ if old galvanized needs to be removed (not just abandoned in walls)
