WHY CORONA DRAINS BACK UP THE WAY THEY DO
Corona is a big household town. The Census Bureau puts the city at 161,734 people across 49,247 households — an average of 3.22 people per home, well above the statewide average. That single number explains most of what we pull out of Corona drain lines. More people means more showers on the same 1.5-inch trap arm, more food scraps down the same disposal, more laundry cycles pushing lint and detergent gel into the same branch line. Fixtures that would last a decade in a two-person household start choking in three or four years here.
The second factor is the water itself. Corona runs its own municipal water system through the city’s Department of Water & Power, and like most of the Inland Empire the supply is mineral-heavy. Dissolved minerals plate out on the inside of drain and waste piping the same way they crust up a shower head. That scale layer is rough, it narrows the pipe, and it gives grease and hair something to grab. A line that scales is a line that clogs on a schedule.
So a Corona drain problem is usually one of three things: a soft blockage in a fixture branch, a hardened build-up ring in a main line, or a structural fault in the sewer lateral. They feel identical from the sink. They are not remotely the same repair, which is why we camera the line rather than guess.
WHAT THE $73 DRAIN CLEANING ACTUALLY COVERS
Rooter King runs a $73 drain cleaning special for standard residential clogs in sinks, showers, bathtubs and floor drains — starting at $73 per accessible drain. “Accessible” is the operative word, and we would rather be blunt about it up front than surprise you at the door.
What that price clears
A single fixture clog reached through an existing cleanout or a pulled trap: kitchen sink, bathroom lavatory, tub, shower, laundry standpipe, garage floor drain. Cable machine, clear the line, run water, confirm flow.
What changes the job
No cleanout access, a clog past the branch and into the main, a line packed with root mass or hardened grease, or a cast-iron drain that has scaled shut. Those are hydro-jetting or descaling jobs, not snaking jobs.
What we do either way
Tell you which one you actually have before we start, and put a camera down the line when the cause is not obvious. You get to see the pipe on the screen rather than take our word for it.
What we will not do
Snake a line four times in six months and keep charging you for it. If a drain re-clogs on a pattern, the pipe is telling you something and we will go find out what.
CABLE, JET OR CAMERA — HOW WE PICK
Three tools, three completely different jobs. Matching the tool to the blockage is most of the skill in this trade.
| Method | Best for | Pipe it suits | What it will not fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable machine (snaking) | Hair, soap, soft food waste, a single stopped fixture | Any branch line, most mains | Scale rings, heavy grease, root intrusion — it bores a hole through, the clog returns |
| Hydro-jetting | Grease, sludge, root hair, restoring full pipe diameter | Sound ABS, PVC, clay and healthy cast iron | A cracked, offset or collapsed pipe — jetting a broken line makes it worse |
| Cast iron descaling | Hardened mineral and rust scale narrowing an old cast line | Aged cast iron only | Pipe that has already lost its floor to corrosion |
| Camera inspection | Finding out which of the above you need | Everything, before and after | Nothing on its own — it is diagnosis, not repair |
| Sewer lateral repair | Offsets, bellies, root-split joints, collapse | The buried run to the city main | A blockage that was only ever grease in the kitchen branch |
If you want the deeper version of any of these, we have full pages on hydro jetting, cast iron pipe descaling and sewer camera inspection and locating.
THE FOUR CORONA CLOGS WE SEE MOST
Kitchen line, grease-packed
The single most common call. Grease goes down warm and liquid, cools in the horizontal run, and grabs coffee grounds and rice. A cable punches a hole through it; the line is full again by the next holiday. This one wants a jetter.
Main line, root intrusion
Mature street trees and older clay or cast laterals are a bad combination. Roots find a joint, thread in, and catch everything. Symptom: every fixture in the house gurgles, and the lowest one — usually a tub or floor drain — backs up first.
Laundry standpipe overflow
A washer dumps a lot of water fast. If the standpipe drains slowly because of lint and detergent build-up, it overflows onto the floor even though nothing is fully blocked. People call it a clog; it is really a flow-rate problem.
Two-story bathroom group
Common in Corona’s tract housing. Upstairs tub drains slowly, downstairs toilet bubbles when it does. That pairing means the blockage is below the point where the two tie together, not in the fixture you are standing at.
WHEN A “CLOG” IS ACTUALLY A SEWER PROBLEM
There is a specific set of signals that tells us to stop snaking and start looking at the lateral. If you recognise more than one of these, a cable machine is the wrong answer:
- More than one fixture backs up at the same time, in different rooms.
- Flushing a toilet makes the shower or tub gurgle or rise.
- The same drain clogs again within weeks of being cleared.
- Sewage smell outdoors, or one patch of lawn that is greener and softer than the rest.
- The cable stops at the same distance every single time.
Any of those and the right move is a camera, not another cable. Depending on what we find, the fix might be a pipe repair, trenchless CIPP lining, pipe bursting or a spot patch — and knowing which one saves you from paying for the biggest option by default.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the $73 drain cleaning real, or is it a door-opener?
It is real, and it is deliberately narrow. $73 covers a standard residential clog in an accessible sink, shower, bathtub or floor drain — one drain, reached through an existing cleanout or a pulled trap. What it does not cover is a main line packed with roots, a kitchen line that needs jetting, or a drain with no access point. We tell you which situation you are in before any work starts, not after.
My kitchen sink clogs every few months. Why does snaking keep failing?
Because a cable does not clean a pipe, it makes a hole in the blockage. If the wall of your kitchen line is coated in cooled grease, a snake bores a channel through it and water flows again for a while — then the channel closes back up. Hydro-jetting scours the pipe wall back to full diameter, which is why a jetted kitchen line stays open far longer than a snaked one.
Do you need to dig up my yard to clear a main line?
Almost never just to clear it. Clearing is done through a cleanout. Digging only comes up if the camera shows the pipe itself has failed — a collapse, a bad offset, or a belly holding water. Even then there are trenchless options, so excavation is the last resort rather than the default.
What is a cleanout and why does it matter for the price?
A cleanout is a capped access fitting that lets a drain machine enter the line directly. With one, a technician is working on the clog within minutes. Without one, we have to gain access another way — pulling a toilet, opening a trap, or going through a roof vent — and that is more labour. If your home does not have an accessible cleanout, adding one usually pays for itself the second time you need service.
Can I just use a bottled drain cleaner first?
We would rather you did not. Caustic drain chemicals rarely clear a real blockage; they sit on top of it in a pool of standing water. That does two things: it eats at older pipe and at rubber gaskets, and it means that when a technician does open the line there is a hazardous liquid sitting there. If a drain is fully stopped, chemicals are the least likely thing to fix it and the most likely thing to cause a second problem.
Is a camera inspection worth paying for if the drain is already flowing again?
It is worth it when the clog was in a main line, when it is a repeat, or when you are buying the house. Those are the cases where the question is not “is it open” but “why did it close”. If it was a single hair clog in a shower and it cleared in ten minutes, a camera is usually overkill and we will say so.
